Quality Is the Brand: Why I Reject 10% of the Lighting Fixtures I Inspect

When the Application Demands More

Take the skincare spotlight: a compact, precision-focused fixture headed for dermatology clinics, med-spas, and aesthetic studios.

These spaces require color-accurate illumination—clinicians need a CRI above 90 and a consistent correlated color temperature to assess skin properly. A lamp that casts a warm shift on a patient's complexion isn't just an aesthetic problem; it's a potential clinical concern.

In the past year, we sent back an entire batch of skincare spotlights because the CRI dipped below spec at the low end of the dimming curve. The fixtures looked fine. They functioned. But they didn't perform to the standard that the application demands. If a lighting fixture with our name on it compromises a professional's judgment, the failure isn't technical—it's a violation of trust.

What Installers Ask Me (and What It Tells You)

When I meet with lighting integrators and specifiers, the questions I hear rarely involve aesthetics. The most common one recently was how to turn LED strip 90 degrees without creating hot spots or dark zones at the corner.

If one globe runs warm, or a batch produces a slightly different beam angle, the entire ceiling reads as "off" to anyone who walks into the room. They may not point at the offending unit. They'll just never quite trust the space.

Addressing the Objection Before You Make It

It's a fair question, and I'd be lying if I said there's no relationship between quality and cost. There is. But the relationship isn't what you're implying.

I'm not arguing that expensive products are inherently better. I'm arguing that consistency is the real measure of quality. A budget-friendly fixture that meets its promised specifications, every single unit, is genuinely high quality. A premium fixture that arrives with a misaligned shade or a flickering power driver is a more expensive failure—and arguably worse for the brand that makes it.

What I'm asking for, and what we hold at Flos, is a standard that doesn't vary by product tier. The same inspection routine that applies to a bespoke chandelier applies to a compact portable lamp. The customer who buys our entry-level product deserves the same certainty about performance as the hotel group ordering in bulk for a lobby renovation. That's what makes people trust a brand over time: not one spectacular experience, but the expectation that the product will do exactly what it says, every time.

What I've Learned (and What I Should Have Tracked)

In early 2024, we introduced a more stringent finish tolerance for fixtures bound to hospitality and healthcare projects. I wish I had tracked the downstream impact systematically from day one (mental note: I've said I'd build that dashboard for two years now). I can say anecdotally that project-specific complaints from those sectors dropped noticeably over the following two quarters—but "noticeably" isn't a metric I'd put in a report.

Here's what I know without numbers: quality decisions compound. A batch that gets rejected costs money, but a batch that slips through costs more. Product returns. Revised specifications. Damaged client relationships. The $22,000 redo on a project that could have been avoided with a $400 inspection step. That math doesn't always show up on a quarterly P&L, but it shows up in the long term—and, more importantly, in the way people feel about the brand.

So, What's the Point?
