Flos Lighting Guide: Choosing Fixtures, Testing LED Bulbs, and Avoiding Costly Mistakes

If the String Light Flos is on your list
The Flos String Light, designed by Michael Anastassiades, is one of the most adaptable systems the brand makes. A thin suspension cable, small glass globes, and light points you can reposition along the line. Three configurations — one, two, or three circuits — so you can switch sections independently. It looks minimal, reads as architectural, and works above a bar counter, a gallery wall, or a long dining table.
The total-cost angle: yes, it's more expensive per metre than standard track lighting. But you're buying a system you can reconfigure when the layout changes, no bulky rails, and a design that doesn't date. Spread that over a ten-year lifespan and the difference shrinks to something close to negligible.
The Chiara table lamp: a safe bet, with one warning
The Flos Chiara table lamp has been around since 1969, designed by Mario Bellini. It's a single sheet of polished stainless steel, folded into a sculpture that happens to be a lamp. I've specified it in a ton of hospitality projects — boutique hotels, members' clubs, restaurant tables. The light is soft and spread in every direction, which is flattering to faces, food, and conversation.
One honest warning: Chiara is not a focused task light. People buy it expecting to read under it. It won't do that well. It's ambient. If your client needs task-level illumination, get something directional. Beautiful and practical can be two different conversations.
Contemporary chandeliers: the ones I rush-order most
The Flos 2097 — designed by Gino Sarfatti in 1958 — is still the reference point. Bare steel wires radiating out, exposed bulbs, a shape that takes a room from flat to architectural in minutes. I've ordered this one same-day for clients more times than I can count. It's also one of the most photographed contemporary chandelier designs in the world, which tells you something.
But here's the thing: don't pick a chandelier by photo alone. I remember a client who insisted on a dense, heavy look because it seemed "luxurious" on screen. On site, it blocked the view across the room. Check the dimensions, not just the silhouette. And verify ceiling height — more than one "double-height" lobby turned out to be a regular-height lobby with architectural drawings that lied.
When comparing chandeliers, use total cost of ownership, not sticker price. A $2,000 fixture with quality LED bulbs might run you $40 a year in energy and need nothing else. A $900 lookalike with cheap drivers might fail in two years — and then you're paying labour to take it down, repair it, and remount it. The cheapest upfront option often has the highest five-year cost.
Scenario 2: Outdoor and Landscape Lighting (the Lawn Spotlight Question)
Outdoor lighting is usually the last item on a project schedule. And it's the first to fail — because it sits in weather, at heights that catch frost, with cables that landscape crews accidentally slice with a shovel.
What actually matters in a lawn spotlight
If you're choosing a lawn spotlight, or several for facade washes and pathway grazing, look at three things:
- IP rating: IP65 or better for exposed locations. IP20 indoor fixtures will die in one season. The rating system comes from IEC 60529, and the difference between IP44 and IP65 is basically water jets vs. splashes — for a lawn spotlight, you want the water-jet protection.
- Beam angle: tight beam (15–25°) for accenting a tree or sculpture, wide (40–60°) for washing walls. The wrong beam makes a beautiful facade look like a interrogation scene.
- Voltage: low-voltage (12V/24V) systems are safer and more efficient but need a transformer and proper cabling. Line voltage is simpler, less flexible, and harder to reposition later.
The buying mistake I see constantly: $30 spotlights that "look the same" as the $120 Flos model online. They don't perform the same, and in two years you're digging up the garden to replace them. The labour cost of that replacement is way more than the fixture savings. That's TCO.
A story from my own files: in March 2024, a client called on a Thursday because their garden lighting had died before a Saturday wedding. We had about 36 hours. The original installer had mixed wire gauges on one transformer. Not ideal, but workable if the load was right. Scenario 3: Your Fixture Isn't Working — How to Test an LED Bulb with a Multimeter
When a Flos lamp stops turning on, most people's first instinct is: the fixture is dead, replace it. Honestly, from my experience, it's the bulb or the dimmer about 70% of the time. And replacing a bulb is a very different cost universe than replacing a fixture.
So before you call anyone — and definitely before you order a replacement — do a two-minute diagnostic.
Step-by-step: testing an LED bulb
First, safety: take the bulb out of the fixture and make sure the wall switch is off before you remove anything. The multimeter's test voltage won't hurt you. The line voltage at the socket absolutely will.
- Set your multimeter to diode test mode — the symbol that looks like a small arrow with a line, or the continuity sound-wave icon.
- Touch one probe to the centre pin on the base of the LED bulb (the live pin in Edison-base bulbs).
- Touch the other probe to the threaded metal side. This is the neutral connection.
On a healthy LED bulb with a direct-current driver, you'll see a voltage drop somewhere around 1.5V to 3V in one polarity — that's the internal rectifier and diode array letting a small current through. If you read OL (overload / open loop) in both directions, the bulb's driver or internal connection is open, which means it's dead. If you get a reading in both directions, suspect a shorted driver — also dead.
The multimeter test catches dead bulbs instantly. But it won't catch everything — some failing LED drivers test fine and still flicker. If the bulb passes but the light flickers, the issue is probably the driver or the dimmer, not the LED chip itself.
I knew I should test the bulb before ordering a replacement chandelier for a client. But with a deadline two days out, I assumed the whole fixture was dead. The client said "something's wrong with the light," and I fast-tracked a $900 replacement. Turned out to be a $12 LED bulb. A lesson learned the hard way: never skip diagnostics because you're rushing. Rushing is exactly the time to be methodical. That mistake cost us real money and a chunk of client confidence.
Check the dimmer, too
One more thing. LED bulbs and dimmers are a compatibility minefield. If the bulb tests fine but flickers, buzzes, or won't turn fully off at the dimmer, the dimmer isn't rated for LED loads. Check the dimmer's minimum wattage. Some LED bulbs need at least 10W of load on the circuit to behave, and if you're running a single 5W bulb on a dimmer rated for 600W of incandescent, you'll get ghosting and flicker. The same goes for smart switches without a neutral wire.
So the question isn't always "is my Flos fixture broken?" Sometimes it's "is my dimmer talking to my bulb?"

Here's how to decide, quickly and without a consultant:
- Still at the planning table, choosing fixtures → Scenario 1. Use the TCO framework: cost per year, not the sticker price. The String Light Flos, the Chiara table lamp, and a contemporary chandelier like the 2097 are all long-term pieces — buy them once, buy them right.
- Lighting that lives outside, or is about to → Scenario 2. Check the IP rating, match the beam angle to the surface, and factor installation labour into the budget. A lawn spotlight is only as good as the system behind it.
- Something stopped working → Scenario 3. Test the LED bulb with a multimeter before replacing anything. Then check the dimmer. Then call someone.
Bottom line: Flos fixtures are investments in design, not commodities. The upfront price is real, but the cost per year — with proper bulb selection, dimmer compatibility, and weather-rated installation — usually beats the "cheaper" alternative that needs constant babysitting. Answer three questions — what's failing, when does it need to work, and what's the total cost of getting it right — and the rest is easy.
