A Project That Started With a Plant Question

Last January, a project landed on my desk that I nearly declined. The request: “We need a Flos magnetic track light customized for a 40-foot display wall, and we need it before the April install date.” I’ve reviewed 200+ custom lighting fixtures a year as a quality and brand compliance manager at Flos. Most custom lighting jobs start with a spec sheet and a site drawing. This one started with a Pinterest board, a rough sketch, and a question that should never be an afterthought. In my experience, that’s when quality problems happen.

The lighting designer had a clear idea. He called it his “spotlight theory”: one strong focal point, a darker path, and a single vertical accent instead of a ceiling full of even downlights. I remember thinking—finally, someone who understands contrast. But a theory only works if the hardware actually delivers it. That’s where the Flos magnetic track light customization came in.

Then I checked the ceiling section and found that the recessed feed wasn’t dimensioned. The electrical contractor would have had to cut a hole blind. I looked at the line item sheet and asked a question that should be standard in every lighting bid: “What is NOT included?”

The answer was long. The low quote didn’t include a photometric test. It didn’t include the dimming interface module, the custom mounting base for the Parentesi, or the engineering support for the floor-to-ceiling installation. It also had a 12% restocking fee if the driver ended up being incompatible with the building controls. What most people don’t realize is that a “custom track lighting” quote can exclude half the components that make the system work: track couplers, end caps, suspension points, feeds, and drivers. If it’s not in the product photo, it’s often not in the price.

Here’s something vendors won’t tell you: the first quote is almost never the final price. If a quote is missing photometric data, there’s usually a reason. According to IES LM-79-08, photometric measurements must be taken on the complete luminaire, not just the LED chip. Without that test, the pretty renderings are guesses. A 4% difference in beam angle can turn a $12,000 wall into a dark pool with a glare line. For a quality manager, these are the spotlight jobs—the ones everyone sees, the ones you can’t hide behind a sofa.

“I’d rather send a quote that looks high on page one,” I told the client, “than have you discover an omitted driver on installation day. That’s not a sales tactic; that’s quality control.”

I also knew that if we matched the low number, we would skip something. Maybe not on purpose. But something would move to the “as-built” column, and that’s how quality issues appear.

Spotlight Theory, a Floor-to-Ceiling Lamp, and the Plant Wall

The plant wall question kept coming back. The client wanted a living wall behind the checkout area, and the interior designer was pushing for a romantic 2700K glow. I’ve never fully understood why we expect warm light to help plants grow. It can—plants will survive under many sources—but the useful spectrum for photosynthesis is red and blue, not warm white alone.

What color light helps plants grow? The practical answer is: red (around 660 nm) and blue (around 450 nm) are the most efficient for photosynthesis. But a fixture that only emits red and blue turns people into purple ghosts, which is bad for a retail space. For this project, we used a 4000K track head with a CRI above 90. It gave the plants useful red and blue energy while making skin tones look normal. Don’t hold me to the exact PPFD numbers; those depend on mounting height, beam spread, and plant species. But the color question is simpler than most people make it.

Then came the Flos floor to ceiling lamp. The model was Parentesi, designed by Achille Castiglioni and Pio Manzù. It’s an elegant solution—a tensioned cable between floor and ceiling, a weighted counterweight, and a lamp head that glides along the cable. The atrium ceiling was 22 feet, which should have been fine. But the floor was 3 inches of marble over a hydronic heating system. The standard anchor would have cracked it. We had to design a custom spreader plate and a counterweight that could live under the marble without being visible. That added two weeks to the schedule and another line to the quote.

This is why the lower bid wasn’t really lower. The track light had to be installed by someone who could field-engineer the mounting, not just hang fixtures. The floor-to-ceiling lamp had to be tensioned correctly or it would sway every time someone walked past. Those details aren’t luxury extras. They’re the job.

The Lesson: Transparent Doesn’t Mean Cheap

The installation went in on March 28, two days before the grand opening. I flew out for the final check. The track fired up at 10 percent brightness, then slowly ramped to full. The plant wall looked even without looking artificial. The vertical line from the Parentesi lined up with the atrium column, exactly as the designer’s sketch intended.

The client said something I don’t often hear: “I’m glad you didn’t match that quote.” The other vendor had reappeared after our rejection with a new number—the original price plus the forgotten components. It was only $600 lower than ours. The client told us they would have spent more than $18,000 fixing the installation if the dimmer had been wrong and the ceiling had to be reopened.

In 2022, I approved a cheaper driver to save $3,500 on a custom order. The failure rate was 8% after 18 months, and we replaced them for about $5,400 in parts and labor. That was my lesson: saved money often moves from the discount column to the rework column. This pricing was accurate as of Q1 2025; the market changes fast, so verify current numbers before you budget.

If you ask me, transparency is a quality specification. A quote that lists everything, including the parts that aren’t pretty, is easier to defend than a low number followed by surprises. The spotlight theory worked because every component was accounted for. The floor-to-ceiling lamp worked because we checked the floor, not just the ceiling. The plant wall worked because someone asked the obvious question instead of guessing.
