Flos Glo-Ball Ceiling Light vs Round Downlight: What Should You Specify?

Round downlights are a natural fit for Zigbee, because they're frequently sold as systems: housing, driver, and control module are selected together. This means a room of downlights can act as a single controllable zone with dimming, occupancy scheduling, and scene presets. Need fewer wired control cables? Yes. That's why efficient workflows win on large fit-outs.

The Glo-Ball doesn't come with Zigbee built into the basic fixture. Instead, you can use a Zigbee smart bulb or a Zigbee dimmer in the ceiling. That works fine for one fixture. But if your project needs synchronized scenes across 20 fixtures, designing around individually smart bulbs gets messy. My rule: Glo-Ball for feature moments, Zigbee downlights for the system.

Cost, 'Flos Lighting Sale', and Lead Times

Searches for Flos lighting sale usually come from consumers, not designers. But I get it—the Glo-Ball isn't an inexpensive fixture.

Pricing varies widely by market and dealer (as of April 2025; verify current rates). What matters more than the ticket price is the total installed cost. A Glo-Ball looks expensive until you count the downlight housing, transformer, labor, and ceiling repair. A downlight scheme looks efficient until you discover the specified trim is discontinued and you have to patch twelve holes.

In my experience, deals on current Flos lines are rare. A genuine Flos lighting sale usually covers ex-display pieces, discontinued finishes, or older catalogue stock. If a vendor is offering 40% off on a current Glo-Ball, I check the packaging and series code before sending the PO. I've learned that the hard way.

One more procurement note from an emergency specialist: if the client wants a specific round downlight with a custom color trim, make sure the finish is chosen early. A Pantone-matched powder coat on a downlight trim can add lead time.   • You need glare-free general illumination across an open plan.
  • Ceiling height or fire codes make surface fixtures a problem.
  • You're installing 20 or more fixtures and want one consistent control ecosystem (Zigbee or similar).
  • The ceiling plane must stay clean.

If you can, use both. Put the Glo-Ball where people sit. Use round downlights for circulation and task light. That is the answer I give most often in hospitality work—not because it's diplomatic, but because the two lights solve different problems.

To be fair, downlights win for open plan and glare-free work. Glo-Ball wins for memory and mood.

Before I get quoted as saying 'always use Glo-Ball', I should qualify: my experience is based on roughly 60 projects—hotels, storefronts, offices. If you're working on a museum with strict conservation requirements or an outdoor installation, the comparison changes. I can't speak to those.
