Why Your Flos Hanging Lamp Looks Wrong (and What It Costs to Find Out)

I'm not going to start with a formula. I'm going to start with a phone call.

March 2024, 5:17 p.m. I was getting ready to leave when a designer called. I knew from the first “are you sitting down?” that this wasn't a normal order. She had specified a Flos hanging lamp for a dining room. The lead time was tight, so she'd swapped it for a Pottery Barn chandelier available from a local stockist. The fixture was installed, the client walked through that evening, and the text came back fast: “It's too big.”

But it wasn't too big by width. The diameter was right for the table. It was visually heavy, hung a few inches lower than the render, and it made the dining room look shorter than it actually was. She had 36 hours to fix it before final handover. Her first question wasn't aesthetic. It was: “Can you fix this in 36 hours?”

I've been in that kind of situation a lot. In my role coordinating rush lighting replacements for a distributor, last quarter alone we processed 47 rush orders. Maybe 46—I'd have to check the system. But most traced back to dimensions, scale, or clearance. I don't have hard data on the industry as a whole. Based on our internal numbers, I'd estimate 60% of these jobs are sizing-related.

A client recently mentioned the Spotlight podcast episode on common lighting mistakes. The host said something I've repeated to every designer since:

“When a light looks wrong, the problem is rarely the light—it's the context.”

That's exactly what I see.

What People Actually Mean by “Fixture Size”

When someone searches for how to determine light fixture size, they usually want a formula. Room length + room width in feet = fixture diameter in inches. That formula has value. It gives you a starting point. But it treats all fixtures like identical shapes. The two things it misses are visual mass and vertical space.

A Flos hanging lamp is not one product. It might be a skeletal 2097, a delicate IC pendant, or the fluted shade of a Bellhop. Each one has a different visual weight. Flos IC lights are the example I use most. The IC pendant is essentially a glowing orb on a thin stem. It's all negative space. A Pottery Barn chandelier with the same diameter is not negative space—it's a solid object with arms, shades, and hardware. Put both in similar dining rooms, and one will feel twice as large as the other.

This is the “24-inch illusion”: two fixtures can be identical in diameter and completely different in perceived scale. Product photos make it worse. A white-background image can make a 30-inch chandelier look like it belongs on a dollhouse table. Per FTC advertising guidelines, the specs have to be truthful, but truthfulness doesn't include scale.

The Hidden Dimension: What Lives Above the Table

Horizontal sizing is where most advice stops. But a fixture occupies a volume. The width is only one part.

Take a 24-inch chandelier with a 30-inch body height and 36 inches of cable. The total vertical envelope is 66 inches. If your ceiling is 9 feet, that leaves only 42 inches between the bottom edge and the floor at full drop. In a walkway, that's dangerous. In a dining room, a fixture hung too low makes the room feel closed in.

With a Flos hanging lamp, the cable can be part of the design. But that means the drop is an intentional decision, not an afterthought. When someone asks me how to determine light fixture size, my answer always includes measuring the air: total drop, clearance below, and the visual distance between the fixture and the floor.

What a Size Mistake Actually Costs

This is where I get annoying about total cost. A Pottery Barn chandelier can feel like a reasonable alternative to a Flos hanging lamp. But the purchase price is the beginning.

Let me walk through a typical replacement:

  • $85 restocking fee
  • $145 expedited shipping from the right source
  • $220 for an electrician to go back and swap the fixture
  • $115 to patch and paint where the old mount was
  • 3 days of schedule delay, which in a live project rarely costs zero

The $700 “budget win” can turn into a $1,100 mistake before you account for the client's lost confidence. That is not speculation. It's the arithmetic I've seen on rush order after rush order.

I'll be honest: I've made this mistake myself. The numbers said a budget fixture would save money. My gut said the proportions were wrong for the room. I overrode it. The fixture came down 11 days later. Now I calculate total cost before I send a single recommendation.

How to Determine Light Fixture Size

Here's the short version of what I do before ordering. It is intentionally boring.

  1. Identify the reference point. Is the fixture over a dining table, an island, a stairwell, or an open seating area? The room-length-plus-width formula is for ambient light, not task lighting.
  2. Use table width for dining fixtures. A pendant or chandelier above a table should be about 1/2 to 2/3 of the table's width. A 42-inch table gets a 21–28-inch fixture. For a round table, use 1/2 to 2/3 of the table diameter.
  3. Respect vertical clearance. Above a dining table, the bottom of the fixture should generally sit 30–36 inches above the tabletop. In an open walkway, keep it at least 84 inches above the floor.
  4. Judge visual mass, not just diameter. If the fixture has many arms, dense shades, or a dark material, size down 10–20%. If it's visually light—a thin stem, an open structure, a single glowing sphere—you can often size up.

Flos IC lights are a good test case. Because the design is so minimal, a larger IC pendant can still feel light in the room. A heavier chandelier at the same diameter will feel bigger. That nuance matters more than any perfect calculation.

One honest caveat: this was accurate as of Q1 2025, and product specifications change often. Always verify the current spec sheet before you commit.

And to be clear, I'm not telling you to avoid last-minute swaps. If that Pottery Barn chandelier is the right fixture and it's been sized with a plan, it can work. Just don't fall in love with the photo. Run the numbers. Measure the air. Think about what the light will look like in 24 months, not just 24 hours.
