Test the Light Switch First: What a Lighting Emergency Specialist Actually Does
If a light isn't working, test the wall switch before you order anything. This feels too simple to be the right answer, but it's the right answer more often than you'd think. In the last three years alone, I've coordinated 140+ rush orders for lighting installers, hotel projects, and event designers. A quarter of those calls were "dead light" situations where someone was about to buy a new fixture. In at least 30% of those cases, the real problem was a bad switch, a tripped GFCI, or a loose wire in the junction box. The fixture was fine.

The $18 switch that saved a $14,000 hotel opening
In March 2024, a client called at 9:40 AM. A boutique hotel was opening the next morning. The customized Flos magnetic track light system in the lobby had gone dark. One 6-foot section, no response from any module. The general contractor was already on the phone with a supplier, trying to rush a replacement track assembly at a premium.
I asked a boring question: "Did anyone test the switch?" No one had.
We sent a tech with a $25 multimeter. Thirty minutes later he found one bad terminal in the wall switch. The hardware store down the road had a replacement for $18. Repair cost including labor: less than $250. The substitute track assembly would have run about $2,800 and wouldn't have arrived in time for the opening. The difference between an $18 switch and a $2,800 track assembly is way bigger than any rush fee I've ever paid.
Even after the diagnosis, I kept second-guessing. What if the new switch wasn't rated for the LED load? The 20 minutes between handing the replacement to the tech and seeing the lights come on were stressful. But the system powered up, and the opening had one less problem.
Check the lamp before you blame the lamp
The same logic applies to smaller fixtures. Take the Flos Bellhop floor lamp. It shows up in residential and hospitality projects all the time, and it's a good-looking piece. But when it stops working, the fixture is rarely the first thing to blame. The Bellhop family uses LED drivers, and LED drivers act strangely when they're on a circuit with an incompatible dimmer or an intermittent switch. A lamp that gets no power looks exactly like a lamp that's broken.
Here's what you need to know: if you have a Bellhop floor lamp that won't light, test the outlet, test the switch, then test the dimmer setting. Do that before you call your rep or start checking lead times for a replacement.
How to test a light switch in about 10 minutes
This is not a full electrical inspection. It's a quick way to find out whether the switch is acting like a switch. You'll need a non-contact voltage tester and a multimeter with continuity mode. If you don't have them, they're around $30 total at a hardware store. If that feels too involved, call an electrician. But give this a look.
- Turn off the breaker for that circuit. Use the non-contact voltage tester on the wall plate and then on the screw terminals after the cover is off to confirm there's no voltage.
- Remove the wall plate and the screws holding the switch in the box. Pull the switch out gently so you can reach the terminals.
- Set your multimeter to continuity or ohms. Touch one probe to each screw terminal.
- With the switch in the off position, the meter should read "OL" or infinite resistance. Flip it on. The reading should drop to near zero. If it stays open in both positions, the switch contacts are gone. If you see continuity in the off position, the switch is shorted.
- Reinstall the switch and cover plate, turn the breaker back on, and test the light. If it works, you just saved yourself an expensive replacement.
Vintage fixtures are a different animal
A 1940s chandelier is not the place to guess. The fixture might be beautiful, but the electrical system from that era was not designed for today's loads, and the wall switch connected to it might be just as old as the chandelier. If the chandelier suddenly goes dark, the switch test still comes first. But don't stop there. Old cloth wiring, worn sockets, and a missing ground are all bigger risks than a failed switch.
And if you're dressing one for an event, keep this in mind: a chandelier garland looks delicate, but fresh greenery is heavy. A vintage chandelier hanging from a 1940s ceiling box wasn't designed to support an extra 20 pounds. The electrical question matters, but the weight question can be the dangerous one. Have a professional confirm the ceiling box is rated for the fixture plus the garland.
The real cost of skipping the test
We didn't have a formal "test before order" policy for a long time. Then we paid overnight freight three times for replacement parts that didn't need replacing. The third time, I made a checklist. Now every rush request gets the same five questions: Is the breaker on? Is the switch working? Is there voltage at the fixture? Is the dimmer compatible? Is anything loose in the junction box?
The checklist is my cheapest insurance. That $25 multimeter plus 10 minutes of verification has saved us—and our clients—tens of thousands of dollars in unnecessary rush orders. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.
What the test won't tell you
Honesty part: a switch test won't tell you whether a custom Flos magnetic track system has a broken conductor inside the track, and it won't tell you whether a 1940s chandelier needs a full rewire. It only tells you whether the switch is the problem. But that's exactly the point. If the switch works, you can move to the next likely cause. If the switch doesn't work, you've just saved yourself a lot of time.
I get why people skip the test—deadlines are real. But the cost of replacing a working fixture is worse. This approach worked for us because we're a mid-size operation with commercial and design projects. If you're a homeowner with a 100-year-old house, the steps are the same but the risk profile is different. When in doubt, pay for an hour of an electrician's time. It's cheaper than a rush order.
