Why There's No Universal "Best" Lighting Specification

People think high-end fixtures make commercial spaces look better. Actually, consistent, well-planned lighting makes spaces look intentional. The designer fixture is a bonus, not the foundation.
One more thing for commercial specifications: per FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims about lighting—"energy efficient," "recyclable," "eco-friendly"—must be substantiated. A product claimed as "recyclable" should be recyclable in areas where at least 60% of consumers have access. Ask for the documentation. If a vendor can't provide lumens-per-watt data or recycling information, that's a red flag.
Scenario 4: Understanding Lighting Controls (and Why "Stop Light Switch" Confuses People)
I field a lot of questions from clients who are trying to describe what they want but don't have the vocabulary. One that comes up surprisingly often: "what is a stop light switch?"
They're usually asking about one of two things: a three-way switch (which controls a light from two locations) or a dimmer switch (which adjusts brightness). The term "stop light switch" itself isn't a standard lighting industry term—it most likely comes from confusion with automotive brake light switches (which, for the record, are completely different products that operate on 12-volt DC systems, not residential AC).
Here's the thing: the question everyone asks is "can I put a dimmer on this?" The question they should ask is "what's the existing wiring configuration?" These are different questions, and the answer to the second determines whether the first is even possible without major work.
In my experience, about 40% of residential lighting projects require some level of switch or control modification. Most older homes weren't wired for the kind of control clients now expect—dimming, multi-location switching, smart home integration. Knowing this upfront prevents the "we need to rewire the entire first floor" conversation that nobody enjoys.
If you're not sure about terminology, that's fine. Be specific about what you want to achieve: "I want to control one light from two different switches" or "I want to dim these lights from my phone." That's clearer than any technical term and will get you to the right solution faster.
How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In
If you're still not sure where your project fits, ask yourself these three questions:
- Who will notice the lighting? If the answer is "design professionals and discerning clients," you're in Scenario 1. If it's "everyone who walks in the door," you're in Scenario 2. If it's "nobody, as long as they can see," you're in Scenario 3.
- What's the lead time? Custom fixtures need 8–12 weeks minimum. If you have less time, you need production fixtures that are in stock or have short lead times.
- What's the budget allocation? If lighting is a visible line item that clients care about, Scenario 1 or 2. If it's part of a general "electrical" line, Scenario 3.
For what it's worth, I've seen projects succeed in all four scenarios. The failures almost always came from applying one scenario's thinking to another scenario's project—specifying a delicate designer lamp for a high-traffic commercial space, or trying to make a quick-turnaround budget work for a client who wanted a statement chandelier.
There's something satisfying about watching a specification come together—when the fixtures arrive, the installation goes smoothly, and the space looks exactly as intended. That doesn't happen by accident. It happens when you match the fixture to the scenario, not the other way around.
