How I Quality-Check a Flos Install: Floor Lamps, Chandeliers, Spots, and the Switch You Forgot to Move

If you only remember one thing, make it this: the most expensive mistakes in a lighting project almost never happen at the moment you pick the fixture—they surface the day it gets installed. Pulling down and rehanging a ceiling chandelier typically costs two to three times the fixture's sticker price once you factor in labor, patching, and re-drilling, depending on ceiling height and substrate. The only way to avoid that bill is to verify install conditions before you order.

I do brand and quality compliance for a lighting supplier. I review specs and incoming units before they reach customers—roughly 200+ SKUs a year. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we rejected 11% of first deliveries. Not because the fixtures were defective. Because the spec sheets left out details that only show up on install day: a 3mm discrepancy in cutout dimensions, a ceiling mount point that wouldn't hold load, a dimming protocol that didn't match the project's wiring. The vendor said it was "within industry standard." Their standard, not ours. We rejected the batch, they redid it at their cost, and now every contract lists those requirements explicitly.

It took me about three years and 400+ spec reviews to understand that how a fixture is installed affects how it looks more than the fixture itself does. That's an uncomfortable thing to admit when you work for the brand.

Here's the checklist I use. It applies to floor lamps, ceiling chandeliers, and spotlights—and to one task almost nobody schedules early enough: moving the switch.

Floor lamps: measure the light throw before you look at the base

Most Flos floor lamps are statement pieces, and the gap between "statement" and "fits your room" is usually geometry, not taste. The obvious example is Arco. The head reaches out about 2.1 meters from the base, and the light pool lands roughly 1.5 meters out—not directly underneath. Stand next to your sofa with that number in mind before ordering. I've watched people install it and then realize the light hits whoever's sitting down instead of the room (oops).

Base weight is the other thing people skip. The Arco's marble base runs around 60 kg. On underfloor heating or floating floors, confirm point-load capacity with whoever installed the floor. I had one project where the base settled and opened a 2mm seam between floorboards. The contractor called it "cosmetic." Visible is not cosmetic.

One quick note on bulbs, since "Flos bulb" searches tend to confuse people: most Flos floor lamps ship without lamps included, and the sockets are standard E27 or E14. Per IEC 60061-1, E27 is a 27mm Edison screw and E14 is 14mm. When buying, check the socket designation first, then check whether your intended bulb height physically fits inside the shade. The IC floor lamp is a good example—it's a sphere with the opening at the top, and light diffusion depends on the shade itself. Drop a bulb that's too bright in there and you get a hot point source instead of a glow.

Ceiling chandeliers: mount load and dimming protocol, in that order

Three things go wrong with ceiling chandeliers: the mount point, the weight distribution, and the dimming protocol.

Factory-supplied expansion bolts are usually not enough for a plasterboard-and-stud ceiling. You need a backing plate, or you need to find the structural layer. Fixture weights range from two or three kilos (something like a 2097/30) up to double digits. Installers will often say "it'll hold" before they've looked inside your ceiling. Verify it yourself, or have the electrician open an inspection hatch first (mental note: put "confirm ceiling structure" on the procurement checklist, not the install-day checklist).

Dimming is where I see the most expensive confusion. A lot of current Flos pendants use integrated LED drivers with DALI or 0-10V dimming—not the trailing-edge phase dimming your standard wall panel does. Before buying, confirm which dimming circuit the room or project has. Our internal rule is simple: we don't promise compatibility with any dimming system, we verify fixture-by-fixture against the actual circuit. That one policy has saved us multiple redos.

Counterintuitive detail worth repeating: the more expensive the chandelier, the more it depends on install precision. A mount point off by 5mm throws off the balance of the entire piece. You paid for proportion and lost it at the mounting step.

Spotlights and recessed fixtures: cutout, beam angle, color consistency

For recessed fixtures, the first measurement is the cutout, not the fixture. If the cutout is wrong, everything downstream is scrap. Second is beam angle—the same body with a different lens produces a completely different pool on the floor, so look at the beam diameter at your actual ceiling height, not the product photo. Third is color consistency: if a batch mixes different color-temperature bins, you get a visible wall of mismatched whites once everything is powered up.

We ran a blind test once with two groups of the same spotlight: one with OEM lenses, one with a cheaper substitute. 68% of the designers picked the OEM group as "more professional" without knowing which was which. The cost difference was under $12 per unit—about $3,600 across a 300-unit run. Whether that's worth it depends entirely on the project.

Moving the light switch: decide this before you buy the fixture

I know this sounds obvious: where the switch sits determines how the fixture gets used, and how it gets used determines which fixture you should buy. In practice, almost everyone buys the light first and asks the electrician to figure out how to move the switch afterward.

The order should be:

  1. Mark switch positions and circuit count on the floor plan.
  2. Confirm what's on each circuit and whether any of it needs dimming.
  3. Then pick the fixtures.

If the switch ends up on the opposite wall from the fixture, the run length, whether you can reuse existing conduit, and whether the slab needs chasing all convert directly into cost. Chasing a concrete wall is not the same price as chasing a stud wall. In a rental or a space where you can't touch electrical, you're left with remote-controlled or plug-in options only.

This is not a DIY task. Use a licensed electrician. Beyond safety, there's a detail people forget: in most markets, unauthorized electrical modifications can affect how an insurance claim is assessed if something goes wrong later.

When this checklist doesn't apply

To be fair, if you're just replacing a bulb or moving a table lamp to another room, none of the above matters. This is for new installs or rewiring projects.

Two situations where you can loosen the standard: very tight budgets and temporary spaces. In a temporary space, a broken fixture gets swapped, and you don't need a 60 kg load calculation for it. And one lesson I learned the hard way—if a fixture is still under warranty, don't modify the OEM driver to fit a different dimmer. You lose the warranty, and the first question you'll get is what you changed.

None of this prevents every problem. It prevents one specific category: the kind you only find after install day. Everything else still comes down to judgment on site.
