Flos IC Lights Pendant: The True Cost-Benefit for an Architect's Specification (and When to Skip It)
For 80% of commercial and high-end residential projects, the Flos IC Lights Pendant justifies its £800–£1,200 price tag. For the other 20%—tight budgets, pure task lighting, or temporary installations—the premium is a waste of capital.
I’m a procurement manager for a mid-sized architectural practice in London. - Replacement Economics: The bulb is the most expensive part, and it’s easily replaceable. We’ve never had to junk a fixture because the LED driver died—you just swap the bulb. This is a huge hidden win.

The 20% Case: When the IC Lights Pendant is a Wrong Answer
Honesty requires a boundary. My experience is based on about 120 orders involving designer pendants, mostly in UK commercial and high-end residential. If you’re fitting out a 500-unit student housing block, your experience will—and should—differ.
- Pure Task Lighting Over a Desk: The IC’s shade geometry creates a beautiful, diffused glow. It is not a focused task light. For a reading desk, a £150 architect lamp from a specialist brand will outperform the IC. I’ve seen a client swap out three IC pendants for a single task rail because the aesthetic didn’t match the functional need. That’s a £2,500 mistake.
- Low Ceilings (Below 2.4m): The standard IC suspension is 200cm. On a 2.4m ceiling, the bottom of the pendant sits at eye level. You have to shorten the cable, which ruins the geometry. The mini version exists, but the cost-per-watt goes up significantly. In this case, the IKEA chandelier or a simple wicker pendant light (which can be hung at any height without looking odd) is a smarter pick.
- The ‘Copycat’ Budget Problem: I’ve seen suppliers in the UK offering a visual copy of the IC for £120. The light quality is poor (harsh LED, no dimming), and the build is flimsy. But if your client is just trying to match a Pinterest mood board and will flick the light on twice a year, the knock-off might be the economically rational choice. Practical Specifiers’ Checklist (from our Cost System)
When I see a spec for the Flos IC Pendant, this is the checklist I run in my head:

The Author’s Note (from my own experience)
If I could redo one decision, it would be the time I specified 8 IC Pendants for a high-end restaurant without checking the ceiling profile. The ceiling was a 45-degree sloped timber structure. The Flos mounting kit included the sloped ceiling adapter (thankfully), but the visual effect was off because the pendants didn’t hang perfectly vertical.
