Start Here: A Stair Chandelier Is Not a Single Product

Every week I get a version of the same question: should I use a Flos brass pendant light or a chandelier pendant? My honest answer is, it depends. That sounds like a cop-out, but a stair chandelier is not a single product type. It's a location with completely different constraints—headroom, sightlines, circuit capacity, and real-world maintenance.

When I'm triaging a project, I don't start with aesthetics. I start with total cost of ownership. From the outside, choosing a chandelier looks like it's all about looks. The reality is the fixture price is only a fraction of the lifetime cost.

Scenario 1: Private Home, Normal Ceiling Height

If this is for your own house, I'll give you the advice most product shots won't: skip the giant statement fixture unless your stairwell actually has space for it. For a stair chandelier, the bottom of the fixture should hang at least 7 feet above the walking surface below. Local codes can differ, so verify before you buy.

The Flos 2097/30 is the classic chandelier pendant for this situation. It has 30 lamps—or rather, 30 sockets; the lamps are up to you. In a brass finish, it basically defines the look of a Flos brass pendant light. But before you click buy, calculate the service angle. Can you reach the canopy with a ladder? Do you have space to clean 30 bulbs?

The Flos Mushroom lamp gets mentioned in the same search results, but it's a table lamp, not a stair fixture. I love the shape, honestly, but putting it on a bracket shelf on a landing is different from using it as the main stair chandelier. Don't confuse the product category.

The 'one big stair chandelier' thinking comes from an era when foyers were lit by a single crystal fixture. Today, a row of smaller pendants or wall sconces often does a better job with fewer shadows and a lower total cost. If your ceiling is under 10 feet, that's often the smarter move.

Now do the same math for a $900 fixture with a $300 driver replacement in year three and a finish that cannot be matched later. The cheaper quote can easily lose.

Scenario 3: It's Already Broken and You're in a Rush

In March 2024, a client called at 4 PM. Their stair chandelier had thrown a short and a chunk of glass fell during install. The project had a $35,000 penalty clause. Normal lead time for the replacement part was three weeks.

We found a Flos brass pendant light in stock at an authorized distributor two states away. I want to say the freight was about $240—don't quote me on the exact number—plus lift-gate fees. The electrician was on site by 7 AM. The hotel saved the opening date.

The mistake in this scenario is buying from the cheapest vendor who promises 'expedited standard shipping.' That's not emergency logistics.   • On a standard 120V US circuit, a 100W flood light draws about 0.83A.
  • A 15W LED flood light draws about 0.125A.
  • Continuous loads are generally limited to 80% of the circuit rating, so on a 15A circuit, think 12A max.

Check the fixture's actual wattage, not the 'replaces 60W' number. And watch for LED in-rush: an LED flood light can draw a brief current spike that trips a breaker even if its steady draw is tiny. For a chandelier pendant, add up the lamps. A 30-lamp chandelier with 5W LED bulbs is 150W, or 1.25A. With 60W incandescent candles, it's 1,800W and overloads the circuit. That's why the lamps you put in the fixture are part of the electrical design.

That 80% limit comes from the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), which is what most local inspectors apply. Verify with your local code because amendments vary.

Which Scenario Are You Actually In?

Ask yourself these three questions.

  1. If the fixture arrives damaged, who handles it and how fast?
  2. Who will clean and re-lamp this in five years?
  3. Have I calculated the total cost of ownership, or just compared prices?

If you're a homeowner, buy the piece you love, but include a licensed electrician and a compatible dimmer in the budget. If you're a specifier, put the service access and replacement parts on the drawing. If you're in emergency mode, prioritize real inventory over the lowest quote.

The Flos 2097/30 is a stunning chandelier pendant. The Flos Mushroom lamp is a beautiful little light. But neither is automatically right for every stair. The right fixture is the one you can install, power, maintain, and live with for years without a cost surprise.
